How to Become a Reiki Practitioner
Everyone can learn to use Reiki! You don’t need a background in the health care field. The knowledge and ability is passed on from the teacher to the student. The student starts channeling Reiki energy after the attunement.  How much you use Reiki and gain confidence and knowledge in using it is up to you.  If you have a sincere desire to help other people and are willing to commit time to that end than Reiki may just be the healing modality for you. People who become Reiki practitioners try to live by the precepts or Gokai created by Dr. Usui. (See below.)

You should also understand that just being attuned to the Reiki energy will create changes in your being – mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. This is sometimes called The Reiki Cleanse. The attunement raises your entire vibrational energy level as well as opening you to channel Reiki. You may pass through periods of various physical or emotional symptoms as your being adjusts and releases old feelings and patterns of thought. We often say this occurs over a 21 day period.  Not only will you see yourself in a different manner but other people may change in their relationship to you. As you progress through each level of training you will again find yourself undergoing changes in your perception of yourself and the cosmos.

Once you have had a Reiki attunement you will always be a channel for Reiki.  Sometimes you will think that you don’t feel anything or that it has been too long since you used Reiki and it is gone. You should never doubt that you can always call upon the spiritually guided universal life force energy of Reiki and it will answer your need.  What a client’s body/mind does once it receives the Reiki is not something you can decide, but you will be able to channel it for them.

The Level I class generally includes:

  • Learning about energy healing in general
  • Learning about Reiki energy and its influence
  • Learning about the history of Reiki
  • Learning the hand positions for a session for yourself and others
  • An attunement to the Reiki energy
  • Hands-on practice

The Level II class generally includes:

  • Learning about three of the Reiki symbols
  • Learning how to give Reiki sessions in absentia
  • An attunement to this level

The next level may be Master or Master/Teacher depending on how you choose to continue.

What Happens during an Attunement
The Reiki attunement is a ceremony performed by a Reiki Master which connects the student to the spiritually guided universal life force energy that is Reiki. The Master will have the students sit quietly in a meditative mood while he or she uses gestures and words to facilitate the opening of the Reiki channels. The student may experience a variety of sensations during his or her meditation. When all the students have been attuned the ceremony will come to a close.  The students will usually take a break after the attunement and then proceed to hands-on sessions. Often the teacher will ask that they perform the first healing on themselves.

Choosing Your Teacher
There will usually be several people teaching Reiki in a large town.  Check with practitioners of other modalities to see if they know someone.  Ask at the local whole foods store, holistic clinic, or metaphysical store. You can also look online doing a search for Reiki teachers in your area.

When you contact someone trust your intuition as to whether they seem like a good match for you. You can ask them for the names of students you might call to ask about the class.

Ask the teacher about the class times, cost, outside commitment required, hands-on practice. Ask them what style of Reiki they teach.  There are many different branches of Reiki now since people have added their own modifications over the years.  See if their training will attune you in the Usui Reiki lineage.  Ask if the teacher is available for follow-up support?  Does the teacher respond to these questions in a considerate manner?

The Reiki Principles

Just for today:  Do not worry.

Just for today:  Do not anger.

Just for today:  Honor your teachers, your father and mother, and your neighbors; count your blessings; and show appreciation for your food.

Just for today:  Earn your living honestly.

Just for today:  Be kind to everything that has life.
